History is being written on such an important scale right now. It's time to defend our rights, defend our freedom, and fight for the America we need to exist for future generations. It's time to join together, now more than ever.
"Few people will admit it but most of us (myself included) are petrified of getting close.
Why? There’s many reasons but they all come down to one reason – we are scared of getting hurt. If we feel close, if we feel loved, or dependent on someone else, then they have the ability to hurt us by not returning our vulnerability, our affection, or our love. Or they can do the ultimate and leave us, justifying all of the fears we had in the first place."
A person's capacity for gratitude isn't based on faith as much as it isn't based on how much a person has, but instead, it is a choice to regain the right perspective of their lives. It becomes a powerful tool and personal power. In a world full of distraction, let's take some time to be the people to cultivate our own personal power. Lets pick up our power, power that we each possess, they are not tied to rank, privilege or circumstance, they are each powers cultivated from within.
In my experience, art therapy allows us to access unconscious emotions that may be difficult to express with words. It allows us to be seen and heard in a different way. Sometimes we as humans walk around with unresolved wounds and art gives us an opportunity to discharge and process some of our experiences.
Often lost in the chaos of anxious thought or paranoid delusion, spending two seconds, when I start to feel the anxiety rise and scan my body for areas of tension, I notice my teeth clenched, my belly tight and facial muscles tense. Taking a minute to “breath into” those areas and relax them can turn an anxiety attack right around. I have horrible social anxiety and sometimes, just checking in with my body and breath and get me through even the longest of interactions.
I tell this story in detail, I share with you because I believe in the power of stories, the power of stories that we tell each other and we tell ourselves. I believe stories can heal, telling you healed me and maybe it can heal you. I think we don’t talk about rape enough, we don’t talk about loss, sexual abuse and trauma. We don’t talk about our addictions and we certainly don’t talk about the people who suffer in silence, those who are suffering now and the ones who have suffered, survived and thrived. Because healing needs those bitter and painful parts of ourselves and experiences, and that where our beauty and strength grows from.

Carrie Fisher was a beautiful soul who fought the stigma of mental health by being open about her struggles with bipolar and addiction. She used her platform to fight for awareness and empower women. She allowed her mental health to inspire instead of repressing it and hiding. Her bravery, humor, and talent changed the world. If you haven't, read her memoir Wishful Drinking, watch her documentary of the same name, and read / watch Postcards from the Edge, in which Carrie fictionalized her experience with addiction. "I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived it, I'm still surviving it, but bring it on. Better me than you." ✊️
